Play Therapy

The language of childhood is “play” and so the best way to connect, communicate with, and help most children less than 10 years old is through play. But play therapy is more than just playing; it is a special way, a therapeutic way, of playing with children. As children become pre-adolescents and adolescents their preferred mode of communicating moves into the realm of words and thus most adolescents respond better to talking types of therapy. Many therapists and some doctors (including me) have some training in Play Therapy, however, most are not Registered Play Therapists, which requires a special intensive training program. I usually recommend registered play therapists when I recommend play therapy specifically. But almost all children below the age of 10 years old do better in therapy if it is a kind of play therapy.
